‘Women Supporting Women’ in Tamworth, North Warwickshire and Atherstone areas

Friday, 25th May 2018

A SMALL women’s group based in Atherstone has been welcoming women from Tamworth, North Warwickshire villages, Atherstone and Nuneaton areas for over four years.

The women come together to reduce loneliness, to learn crafts, to enhance their confidence and every fortnight they have a free Lunch Club. The women attending decide what they need to enhance their well being, and popular choices are craft activities, confidence raising sessions and outside tutor delivered skills workshops.

A Project Lead with extensive experience in Housing and Benefits advice attends sessions to help women access the local services they need, and the organisation is supported by women experts in domestic abuse, safeguarding and pastoral care.

This week the women got together to make cushion covers and one woman said: “I can’t believe how relaxing this is, I haven’t used a sewing machine since I was 11. This makes me forget all the stuff going on in my head at the moment, I love it!”

Over the past four years, women have joined Cohort 4 and have enjoyed crafts, activities, short holidays, trips away and a range of social events. Most of the Cohort 4 women survive domestic or sexual abuse, most have mental health issues, some have been involved in the criminal justice system and all have felt a sense of loneliness and isolation.

The activities are free of charge and the only stipulation in joining sessions is to have a non-judgemental attitude and to want to make new friends and to have some gentle fun. Next week’s activities include a film night, a group meal and attending a Feel Good event in Birmingham. There is a range of activities planned over the forthcoming months ahead.

Cohort 4’s motto is, ‘Women Supporting Women’. If you feel Cohort 4 women’s activities might help you, visit the website for more details www.cohort4.org.uk
