Volunteers invited to first dig for new community garden project

Friday, 20th February 2015

KEEN gardeners and green-fingered volunteers are being invited to grab a spade and join in the first-ever dig at the new active community garden in Belgrave.

Tamworth Borough Council’s Community Development and Sports Development teams have joined together with residents and a number of partners to turn an unused piece of land off Marlborough Way into an active community garden.

The strip of land, which, sits between Tamworth Community Fire Station and St Gabriel’s School, will be transformed into a community garden, which will be developed by local residents, with help from the Council, partners and businesses.

It is hoped that as the garden grows and develops, it will include growing areas where residents and community groups can grow their own healthy vegetables, a communal area for people to meet and possibly prepare food and have a focus on keeping active and fit.

The new garden has been in the planning stages for almost a year, when we ran an article for those interested to go along to a meeting and show their support – but now is the time to pick up a spade and get digging.

The first dig will take place on Wednesday March 4 at 10.30 – and it is hoped that as many volunteers as possible will come along and help dig deep. Volunteers will be able to get involved in marking out the growing areas and digging over the ground, ready for planting.

Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Communities & Public Health, said: “This is very much a community project, so we would like to see as many members of the community there as possible. A lot of hard work and effort has gone into getting this garden off the ground, so I hope it gets the support it needs to make it a success.”

He added: “We want enthusiastic people to come along and tell us exactly how they would like to see this garden develop. We would also like people to work together and really take ownership of the garden, turning it into a symbol of a strong community that all can enjoy.”

To get involved in the first dig on at the new Belgrave Community Garden, just grab your spade and head down to Tamworth Community Fire Station on Marlborough Way at 10.30am on Wednesday March 4.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a spade, as there will be gardening equipment available for you to use.
