HELLO and welcome to my weekly View from the House for Tamworth Informed.
It has been a very busy week preparing for the Lords’ amendments of the EU Withdrawal Bill which returns to the Commons on Tuesday next week.
There has been a lot of chatter recently about the various options relating to our future arrangement with the EU. Regardless of what is rumoured, the Prime Minister has been clear that we will leave the EU and the Customs Union. Our objectives are to have as frictionless trade as possible, an independent trade policy where we can sign our own trade deals, and no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
There has also been a lot of talk this week about the temporary ‘backstop’ and fear that we will be staying in the EU through the backdoor. This temporary measure would only come into effect if our new customs arrangement with the EU is not in place at the end of the Implementation Period.
Our proposed temporary customs arrangement would seek to avoid a hard border in respect of customs on the island of Ireland and between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, through the United Kingdom applying the EU’s common external tariff at its external border, alongside the relevant customs legislation and such parts of the Common Commercial Policy (CCP) as are necessary to make the temporary backstop function.
The backstop will also leave the United Kingdom outside the rest of the CCP and hence free to negotiate and sign free trade agreements with the rest of the world and implement those parts not covered by this temporary customs arrangement, so we are able to begin to reap the fruits of an independent trade policy.
We are making good progress in the negotiations, guaranteeing citizens’ rights and finalising the majority of issues related to our withdrawal. We are moving onto the next stage of delivering the smooth and successful Brexit that everyone wants to see. Whether you voted Leave or Remain we want to get a deal that works for the whole country and this is what we will deliver.
As always, have a great weekend.
