British tourists amongst 28 dead in Tunisia

Sousse, Tunisia

BRITISH tourists are feared to be among 28 people killed after a terror attack at a Tunisian beach resort popular with British holidaymakers.

Tourists reported hearing gunshots on the beach and a loud explosion in the city of Sousse, located in the north-east of the country.

The Health Ministry in Tunisia has said that the majority of victims are British, German and Belgian nationals but that there are also some local victims.

At least one gunman is believed to have been killed. Reports suggest that a second alleged gunman has been captured.

In a statement, the British Embassy in Tunis said: “We are aware of reports of an incident in Port El Kantaoui and are urgently looking into them. We stand ready to provide consular assistance to any British nationals affected”.

Prime Minister David Cameron says the government’s crisis committee, Cobra, will meet later today in response to the attacks. He offered his condolences and ‘our solidarity in fighting the evil of terrorism’.

Scotland yard has urged the public to ‘remain vigilant’ but has not yet raised the terror threat level.

“Our priority is safety and the security of the public. We would also like to reiterate our long standing advice to remain vigilant and alert.” a spokesperson said.

Anyone who is concerned about relatives in Tunisia can contact the foreign office on 0207 008 0000.

  1. I was about to book holiday to Tunisia last week and last minute booked turkey instead. If i had booked i would of been onto travel agent to change. Bloody scary and cant help feel for all those effected . You cant even have an enjoyable holiday relaxing on a beach round them all up i say

  2. I don’t know how these vile cults are growing so fast and recruiting people from all walks of life scares the he’ll out of me. I wouldn’t risk visiting a Muslim country in my lifetime.our government and all the other countries out there need to take a stand and wipe it out fast.

    • Can happen anywhere Lucy. Tunisia struggles to cope and maintain their tourist industry as they’ve said today on news. Turkey would protect the hotels as fast as they could with deploying Jandarma. We were in Turkey when London tube bombings took place, nothing to do with Turkey but they immediately started doing checks on vehicles, set road blocks up with the local Jandarma to protect their western tourists just in case. Tunisia stand a lot to lose on todays massacre, sad truth is its hard to stop something like this happening. R.I.P. all the victims.
