Tamworth Borough Council
NOW that winter is well and truly here, Tamworth residents are being urged to take advantage of an offer which gives them the chance to get their lofts and cavity walls insulated completely free of charge
Homeowners or people renting their homes from a private landlord are eligible for free loft and cavity wall insulation, as long as the house is in the Tamworth Borough Council area.
The offer is open to owner-occupiers and private rented tenants, regardless of age or income. The only stipulation is that a free no obligation property survey is carried out. Unfortunately, the offer is not available to tenants of Tamworth Borough Council properties.
The free insulation measures – which can help residents stay warmer at home in the winter and cooler in the summer, while keeping fuel bills down – are being made available through Tamworth Borough Council’s Home Energy Advice Tamworth (HEAT) scheme.
HEAT has teamed up with experienced installer Insuheat Ltd to deliver the free loft and cavity wall insulation, which is funded through the Government-backed Energy Company Obligation scheme.
Anyone living in Tamworth who would like free loft and cavity wall insulation should call HEAT on 0800 043 2815 or text 07922 651982 for a call-back. Work must be booked with the insulation contractor by March 31 2015, although the work can be carried out after this date.
HEAT can also offer help and advice on all aspects of energy efficiency and other grant funding which may be available to help with heating costs.
A similar scheme launched in June 2011 saw hundreds of householders across the borough get their homes insulated for free.
Loft insulation could save a household £150 a year on fuel bills, and the installation of cavity wall insulation could save £145.
Cllr Michelle Thurgood, Cabinet member for Housing & Waste Management, said: “This is a great offer which will benefit thousands of households in Tamworth. Installing energy efficiency measures is an effective way of reducing heating bills, as well as being good for the environment.
“I would encourage all residents – whether they own their own homes or rent them from private landlords - to take advantage of this offer and have insulation fitted before the scheme comes to an end. Fuel bills will be reduced and you’ll be doing your bit to help reduce carbon emissions as well, which is good for the environment.”
HUGE free arts project which aims to inspire, excite and give people across the borough the chance to have a taste of the arts is set to launch this month – with 12 weeks of free taster sessions to give people the chance to have a go at something new.
I Am Tamworth is the biggest and most ambitious arts project ever to take place in Tamworth, and is the culmination of two years of hard work by the borough council’s Arts & Events team.
Its aim is to encourage people of all ages who may never have attended arts events or taken part in anything creative to get involved, by trying out different things for free, including dance, drama, visual arts, music and writing – and even a ground-breaking dance performance by one of the country’s top dance companies.
And to launch the exciting programme, everyone in the borough is being given the opportunity to join in free taster sessions, taking place in venues throughout the borough from January 12 to April 5.
The sessions include drama workshops, songwriting, guitar playing, singing, street dance, tap dancing, ballroom and Latin dancing, creative writing, theatre, painting, upcycling, dress making and crafts.
Venues for the sessions include St Francis’ Church in Leyfields, Tamworth Rugby Club, Tamworth Library, Amington One Stop Centre, Wilnecote Library, Tamworth Community Fire Station, St Martin’s Church in Stonydelph, Glascote Library and Tamworth Assembly Rooms.
All the sessions are completely free of charge, and people can join in with as may as they like. No experience is necessary, as the idea is to give Tamworth residents the chance to try something new.
Full details of all the sessions, including times and venues, are available by visiting the I Am Tamworth website at www.iamtamworth.co.uk, where the full brochure can be downloaded.
The I Am Tamworth project has been funded by Arts Council England, which has awarded the Arts & Events team a £78,000 grant. It will involve accomplished artists from across the genres bringing their skills to Tamworth and working with the public.
It is split into 15 areas, each celebrating a different form of the arts. Projects throughout the year-long festival include:
- I Am Dance – including a spectacular outdoor performance using Tamworth Castle and the Castle Grounds by award-winning dance company MotionHouse and Tamworth Dance Company.
- I Am Visual Art – shops and empty spaces across Tamworth being turned into pop-up art galleries, creating a portrait trail across the town.
- Trotters Trail – a trail of pigs throughout the town, inspired by the famous Tamworth Two. Pigs will be created by local artists, community groups, schools and local businesses.
- I Am Music – raising the profile of the existing local music scene and encouraging new and emerging musicians.
- I Am Words – creative writing and poetry project, encouraging the people of Tamworth to tell their own stories in their own words. It will include the publication of a book and the creation of poetry trails.
- I Am Drama – a number of drama groups to be established across the borough to cerate short pieces about their areas. This will be brought together in a summer showcase called Tales of Tamworth.
- I Am Heroes – inspired by the stained glass windows in St Editha’s church which were funded by the people of Tamworth to honour those who died in the First World War. Residents, working with artists, will be encouraged to create their own artwork based on the windows, which will be displayed in the church and Tamworth Library.
- I Am Development – a series of events and workshops to support local artists and give them the chance to share their knowledge and skills.
- I Am the Beat – giving families the opportunity to learn a new skill together.
- I Am Art – the finale of the year-long festival will be a huge celebration which will put the community of Tamworth centre stage.
Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy, said: “I Am Tamworth is the most ambitious arts project which has ever been put on in the borough and will give every single person in the borough a chance to have a go at the arts and try something different.
“I would urge everyone to try out at least one of the free taster sessions – they may enjoy it so much that they decide to take up a new arts activity or join a group as a result.
Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult to take part in the sessions. Children under 16 must provide a consent form completed by a parent or guardian to join any of the sessions.
TWO wildlife conservation groups, two young people’s arts organisations and a bereavement care group have benefited from a cash boost of £2,500 from Tamworth Borough Council.
The five groups have each been awarded grants of £500 from the Voluntary and Community Grants scheme and the Arts Grants scheme, which aim to help organisations develop and provide services for the residents of Tamworth.
The latest grants are:
- £500 for Dosthill Park Wildlife Group towards log seating and a boardwalk next to the pond dipping platform at the park. The works will allow access to the site all year round, meaning more visitors will be able to use it.
- £500 for Friends of Warwickshire Moor towards a Waymarker post and repairs to the brushcutter, which allows the group to clear pathways and maintain access to the site.
- £500 for South Staffordshire Cruse Bereavement Care towards running costs for the volunteer-run service, which helps bereaved adults and children in Staffordshire.
- £500 for Shoebox Theatre, to allow the group to continue to meet weekly and work on projects.
- £500 for Synchronicity, to allow young members to hire a venue and organise a production of live music and dance through the decades from the 1950s to the present day.
Cllr Rob Pritchard, Chairman of the Cabinet Grants Committee, said: “Tamworth Borough Council is keen to support as many local voluntary organisations, sports clubs and community groups as possible. The groups are carrying out projects to make Tamworth a better place, help local residents or just give people something to do.
“We are delighted to be able to help these groups – and we could possibly help yours too. If your community groups, arts group, heritage group or sports club is running a project, please get in touch - we might be able to support you too.”
Grants are available to community groups and voluntary organisations which run in the borough to allow them to develop and continue to provide their vital services. To apply for a grant, please contact Karen Clancy at Tamworth Borough Council on 01827 709709 by the closing date of March 1st.
A scheme which offers Tamworth residents the chance to get their lofts and cavity walls insulated completely free of charge has been extended until the end of March.

The offer is open to owner-occupiers and private rented tenants, regardless of age or income. The only stipulation is that you have to have a free no obligation property survey carried out. Unfortunately, the offer is not available to tenants of Tamworth Borough Council properties.

TRADERS, shoppers and visitors to Tamworth are being reminded that they can park for free Tomorrow in the Town Centre.
Parking will be free in all of Tamworth Borough Council’s car parks tomorrow, Saturday December 20 in addition to two weeks ago on December 6.
The car parking fees have been waived on those two days in a bid to boost town centre trade by encouraging more people to come into Tamworth to shop.
The first free parking Saturday on December 6 has been timed to coincide with Small Business Saturday. This is a nationwide campaign to encourage people to shop with independent traders. Every town centre shop taking part in the campaign will display a Small Business Saturday poster in their window.
Small Business Saturday began in the USA four years ago and has grown to become a national event. It aims to promote small independent traders and encourage people to support their local businesses.
The initiative is being spearheaded in Tamworth by the Destination Tamworth team, with the support of Tamworth Borough Council and Christopher Pincher MP.
This year, shoppers are being offered another incentive to support local traders by buying a Destination Tamworth Loyalty Club card, which provides discounts and offers. They are available from the Tourist Information Centre.
Tamworth Borough Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob Pritchard, said: “We are keen to support the town centre, especially at important times like Christmas. We made the decision to waive parking charges on these two very busy shopping days because we want to support traders and boost town centre trade.
“There has been a lot of support for Small Business Saturday in previous years, and I hope that a lot of people will support it again this year. Please tell your family and friends so we can make this the busiest Christmas for the town centre ever. Please come out and support YOUR town centre.”
Extra markets will also be take place in the run-up to Christmas. As well as the usual Tuesday and Saturday markets, there will be additional markets on Friday December 19, Monday December 22 and Wednesday December 24.
TAMWORTH Castle has been awarded Full Accreditation status by Arts Council England – which means that it meets the strict nationally-recognised standards set for museums across the country.
A huge amount of hard work has gone into achieving the award, both from Council staff and volunteers putting hundreds of hours into bringing the care and accessibility of the Castle’s collections and archives up to the nationally-required museum standards over the last six years.
The award also reinforces a shared ethical and professional basis for all participating museums.
Accreditation requires museums to work to a strict set of guidelines on everything from cataloguing and collecting, to how objects are handled, displayed and stored. It also means having policies and procedures in place to ensure that the work is done to a specific standard.
Staff and volunteers have been working to list, number, locate and re-pack and box around 25,000 objects and archives to the required standards, as well as moving all of the stored object collections into a single unit, fully fitted out with specialist museum shelving and racking.
The award lasts for three years until 2017, at which point Tamworth Castle will be invited to reapply for an Accreditation review.
Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy & Education, said: “The awarding of Full Accreditation to Tamworth Castle by Arts Council England is the culmination of years of hard work by the Castle’s staff and volunteers and we are delighted to retain this status as a nationally-recognised museum.
“All this work to retain Full Accreditation was done alongside the demands of running the Castle as a popular visitor attraction and wedding venue. To balance the demands of a professional association alongside the needs of visitors and local people, while managing the Castle efficiently within the ongoing financial constraints is an amazing achievement.
“A lot of work still remains to be done to enable public and research access to the stored collections in particular, as well as the archives, but we are proud of having achieved this award with no conditions attached. This shows that the management of Tamworth Castle’s collections and archives can no longer be described as ‘gathering dust in old store rooms’.”
SHOPPERS and visitors to Tamworth are being given more choice about where to buy their Christmas presents and festive essentials this year – with extra markets being held in the town centre in the run-up to Christmas.
Town centre market operators LSD Promotions Ltd, in conjunction with Tamworth Borough Council, will once again be hosting the extra festive markets, in addition to the normal Saturday and Tuesday markets.
Additional markets will be running in the town centre on Friday December 19, Monday December 22 and Christmas Eve (until 2pm).
The stalls will be dressed in festive style, and on Saturday December 20, there will be a special performance by Amington Band under the Town Hall. Parking is free in all town centre car parks, including Ankerside, on that day.
Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy, said: “Tamworth Market is a vital and popular part of the town centre economy, and I am delighted that we are able to offer extra markets leading up to Christmas.
“I hope they will be very well supported as they are an excellent place to pick up last minute Christmas presents and festive essentials.”
A community safety day to give vital help, advice and information to Tamworth residents was a big success – attracting more than 200 visitors.
The drop-in event was held by the Tamworth Community Safety Partnership last week at the former Clarks shop in Ankerside. The shop was packed full of partners, including police, fire service, Tamworth Borough Council street wardens, Pathway Project, Trading Standards, Neighourhood Watch, T3, Staffordshire Healthwatch, Barnardos, HomeStart, Samaritans and Changes.
Each of the partners was able to offer help and advice on issues including home and shed security, festive safety, littering, dog fouling, domestic violence, Smartwater and much more.
The shop unit was full for the duration of the community safety event, which started at 10am and went on until 3pm.
All of the partners were kept busy throughout the event with people asking for information, joining organisations, signing up for newsletters or just passing on their support for all the hard work which goes into making Tamworth a safer place.
Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Community Development, said: “This event was a valuable addition to all the other hard work which goes on in Tamworth to make it a safe and secure place to live. It gives us a chance to show people how all the partners are working together to ensure their safety.
“The event was a huge success, with more than 200 people coming along throughout the day to talk to partners, pick up valuable safety advice and sign up to schemes and initiatives. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the community safety day such a big success.”
TRADERS, shoppers and visitors to Tamworth are being reminded that they can park in the town centre for free this Saturday.
Parking will be free in all of Tamworth Borough Council’s car parks on Saturday December 6 – with a further free parking day later in the month on Saturday December 20.
It has also now been confirmed that parking will also be free in Ankerside Shopping Centre on these days as they wish to take part in the event to support the Town Centre.

Extra Markets for Christmas
Extra markets will also be take place in the run-up to Christmas. As well as the usual Tuesday and Saturday markets, there will be additional markets on Friday December 19, Monday December 22 and Wednesday December 24.
HUNDREDS of visitors saw Tamworth Castle as they may never have seen it before last weekend as the Castle By Candlelight event returned by popular demand.
The event saw visitors of all ages experiencing the Castle’s rooms, lit as they would have been in the days before electric lighting – with more than 300 candles used for illumination.
The event was on the theme ‘The History of Light’, with costumed guides and room stewards treating visitors to a series of demonstrations and interpretations on the use of light from fire through candles and gas up to electricity, covering both the practical and more inventive sources of illumination.
The event was heavily supported by the Friends of Tamworth Castle, with members of the group taking part in the costumed demonstrations and explanations.
In all, more than 300 visitors experienced Castle By Candlelight – with the huge majority of them commenting on how much they had enjoyed the event.
Castle by Candlelight Castle ran for more than 20 years until 2009 when it was decided to give it a break. It was brought back in a new format this year after a number of requests from the public.
Tamworth Borough Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob Pritchard, said: “We decided to bring back Castle By Candlelight after a lot of requests from people who had enjoyed it so much in the past.
“Visitors who came along to the new Castle By Candlelight told staff how much they had enjoyed it, there was a lot of interaction with the guides and Tamworth Castle looked beautiful, lit up by hundreds of candles.”
He added: “We are very please with how well the return of Castle By Candlelight was received by visitors who came along to enjoy it.”
