TAMWORTH Football Club are offering young fans a chance to watch some local football this Saturday for just £1!

This Saturday (10 Jan), The Lambs take on Guiseley AFC at home and hope to stretch their recent winning streak out to ten games, securing their place even further in the promotion play off zone.

In an effort to swell the numbers of local supporters through the gate, Tamworth FC have decided that the 3pm kick off this Saturday will be a ‘Kids for a Quid’ event, where the ‘Junior Lambs’, aged 6-15 will be able to watch the game in the terraces for just £1. Mini Lambs, the fans age 5 and under will be able to watch the game for free as normal.

The offer is also being extended to allow 16-17 year old fans admission to this home game for just £2, instead of the normal £7. Ticket prices for adults remain the same at £12 for the terraces.

This season, visitor numbers to The Lamb seem to have drastically dropped but the recent winning streak seems to be bringing the fans back. It would be amazing to see a gate of over 1000 again.

Whether you haven’t been to a game at The Lamb for a while, or have never been before, get yourself down to the ground this Saturday and show your support for the local team. It will be amazing to hear hundreds of local voices cheering on the team and helping them win their tenth successive game.

HUGE free arts project which aims to inspire, excite and give people across the borough the chance to have a taste of the arts is set to launch this month – with 12 weeks of free taster sessions to give people the chance to have a go at something new.

I Am Tamworth is the biggest and most ambitious arts project ever to take place in Tamworth, and is the culmination of two years of hard work by the borough council’s Arts & Events team.

Its aim is to encourage people of all ages who may never have attended arts events or taken part in anything creative to get involved, by trying out different things for free, including dance, drama, visual arts, music and writing – and even a ground-breaking dance performance by one of the country’s top dance companies.

And to launch the exciting programme, everyone in the borough is being given the opportunity to join in free taster sessions, taking place in venues throughout the borough from January 12 to April 5.

The sessions include drama workshops, songwriting, guitar playing, singing, street dance, tap dancing, ballroom and Latin dancing, creative writing, theatre, painting, upcycling, dress making and crafts.

Venues for the sessions include St Francis’ Church in Leyfields, Tamworth Rugby Club, Tamworth Library, Amington One Stop Centre, Wilnecote Library, Tamworth Community Fire Station, St Martin’s Church in Stonydelph, Glascote Library and Tamworth Assembly Rooms.

All the sessions are completely free of charge, and people can join in with as may as they like. No experience is necessary, as the idea is to give Tamworth residents the chance to try something new.

Full details of all the sessions, including times and venues, are available by visiting the I Am Tamworth website at www.iamtamworth.co.uk, where the full brochure can be downloaded.

The I Am Tamworth project has been funded by Arts Council England, which has awarded the Arts & Events team a £78,000 grant. It will involve accomplished artists from across the genres bringing their skills to Tamworth and working with the public.

It is split into 15 areas, each celebrating a different form of the arts. Projects throughout the year-long festival include:

  • I Am Dance – including a spectacular outdoor performance using Tamworth Castle and the Castle Grounds by award-winning dance company MotionHouse and Tamworth Dance Company.
  • I Am Visual Art – shops and empty spaces across Tamworth being turned into pop-up art galleries, creating a portrait trail across the town.
  • Trotters Trail – a trail of pigs throughout the town, inspired by the famous Tamworth Two. Pigs will be created by local artists, community groups, schools and local businesses.
  • I Am Music – raising the profile of the existing local music scene and encouraging new and emerging musicians.
  • I Am Words – creative writing and poetry project, encouraging the people of Tamworth to tell their own stories in their own words. It will include the publication of a book and the creation of poetry trails.
  • I Am Drama – a number of drama groups to be established across the borough to cerate short pieces about their areas. This will be brought together in a summer showcase called Tales of Tamworth.
  • I Am Heroes – inspired by the stained glass windows in St Editha’s church which were funded by the people of Tamworth to honour those who died in the First World War. Residents, working with artists, will be encouraged to create their own artwork based on the windows, which will be displayed in the church and Tamworth Library.
  • I Am Development – a series of events and workshops to support local artists and give them the chance to share their knowledge and skills.
  • I Am the Beat – giving families the opportunity to learn a new skill together.
  • I Am Art – the finale of the year-long festival will be a huge celebration which will put the community of Tamworth centre stage.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy, said:I Am Tamworth is the most ambitious arts project which has ever been put on in the borough and will give every single person in the borough a chance to have a go at the arts and try something different.

“I would urge everyone to try out at least one of the free taster sessions – they may enjoy it so much that they decide to take up a new arts activity or join a group as a result.

Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult to take part in the sessions. Children under 16 must provide a consent form completed by a parent or guardian to join any of the sessions.

WITH 2015 just around the corner, a leading male organisation has called for a halt on New Year Resolutions and is offering a sanctuary to men who don’t want to pledge to diet, give up the booze or join a gym!

Round Table, which boasts 400 clubs across Great Britain and Ireland for men aged 18-45, is pledging to remain a resolution free zone and is actively encouraging men across the country to seek refuge in their local club.

Some of the Round Table team taking part in the ‘Sporting Event’ earlier this year.

The ringing in of the ‘New Year’ provides an opportunity to look at life and make some changes.

However, with almost 80 per cent of people failing to stick to their resolutions, the Association is opening its doors to those who want to do more – but without the stigma of failure.

Paul Bryant, chairman of Tamworth Round Table, said: “New Year is about celebration and making the most of life, not a punishment pledge to radically change our lifestyle.

“The high failure rates show that resolutions are futile which is why they should be halted. Why feel a failure for not keeping to a resolution?

“Consequently, Round Table will stay a New Year Resolution free zone offering a safe haven for those that want to celebrate life, do more and feel success.

“This is an opportunity for men from all walks of life to try something new with no strings attached. I urge men across the country to discover a world of new activities and new skills.”

Round Table is offering men in the 18-45 age bracket a free night out with their nearest club in January 2015 – with no resolution needed.

CINDERELLA cast is made up of local actors who volunteer their time every year to put on pantomimes for the people of Tamworth – and some of the stars may be familiar to regular audiences.

The Ugly Sisters, Maxi Mumm and Mini Mumm, are the characters you can’t help but laugh at.

They are played by family favourites Alex Farrell and Terry Batham, and they will get the audience in stitches with their sibling bickering and outrageous outfits.

Terry is well known for playing the irrepressible baddie, having performed at the Tamworth Assembly Rooms for nearly twenty years, but this is not his first time on stage in stilettos.

“This is my second time playing an ugly sister, and it’s one of my favourite roles,” Terry said: “I love bouncing off the audience and giving them some banter, but it’s a part like no other because it’s all about the relationship with my on-stage ‘sister’.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Alex, we get on excellently and suit the parts of Maxi and Mini scarily well.

“If rehearsals are anything to go by, Cinderella will be really funny and I can’t wait to get started.”

Alex is a presenter on local radio station TCR fm, and has been doing pantomime in Tamworth for eight years.

This is his first time as an Ugly Sister, although he is no stranger to dressing up as a woman in the name of pantomime as last year he played Dame Daphne Dumpling in Dick Whittington.

Alex said: “This is my first time in a double act, and I’m really enjoying the experience of being on stage with the same person all the time.

“Working with Terry makes it a pleasure as we are great friends off-stage and are always having a laugh together, so that transfers on-stage and we can really play the audience up - they won’t know whether to boo us or laugh at us!

Cinderella opens at the Tamworth Assembly Rooms this Wednesday 17 December and runs to 23 December and then back again 2 – 4 January.

Tickets are selling fast but can still be bought by calling 01827 709618 or from www.TamworthAssemblyRooms.co.uk.

Santa Trails will also take place on Saturday December 20, Sunday December 21 and Monday December 22.

The tours run from 10am to 4.15pm each day and pre-booking is essential. Admission is £6.50 for children and £3.50 for adults (for the first two adults. Any additional adults are charged £5 each).

A QUICK thinking teenager who helped save the life of her step dad when he suffered a heart attack was among 50 local heroes treated to an exclusive cinema trip.

Ankerside Shopping Centre and Tamworth Round Table chose 15-year-old Kirsty Islip to join other community champions at the special screening to see Paddington, the movie world’s biggest new film.

Kirsty, who was nominated by her parents, was one of a number of courageous youngsters chosen. Others included Joshua Welch, 12, whose father has a brain tumour and brother suffers autism, Claire McCarthy, 10, a loving sister to her special needs younger brother, plus Millfield Primary School lollipop ladies Sue Orton, Linda Shears and Janet Coady.

The celebratory event at Tamworth’s Odeon was laid on to reward unsung heroes of the community in the run up to Christmas. They asked the public to nominate 50 deserving people to receive free pairs of tickets.

Ankerside Shopping Centre Manager Pete Barber said: “As a former paramedic myself, I know that Kirsty’s quick actions made a huge difference. The large number of nominations is a demonstration of the great community spirit of Tamworth, and I’m delighted we could help mark that with these free tickets.”

Tamworth Round Table Chairman Paul Bryant said: “We are grateful to Ankerside Shopping centre for funding the screening of this film. We arranged for Santa and his sleigh to be at the Odeon, to help get everybody into the Christmas spirit.

“There were some very heart-warming nominations and I thank everybody who put forward their own community hero.”

Kirsty, of Wilnecote, said she really enjoyed the film and the chance to meet so many extraordinary people.

Modestly she said she did not consider herself to be a hero despite winning praise from paramedics and family after she stayed calm and clear thinking when her step dad, Fazeley councillor Simon Clements, suffered a heart attack earlier this year.

“When I think about it I realise that if I had not been there to help he might not have survived but I don’t really think of myself as heroic or anything like that,” she said.

Her mum, Tamworth councillor, Tina Clements, was out at a council meeting when Simon, 49, began to feel ill. He told Kirsty he thought he was having a heart attack and she immediately took control of the situation. She did not panic but dialled 999 and stayed on the phone to the emergency services, administering first aid, until the paramedics arrived. She also contacted her mum to explain what had happened.

Simon, who suffered a second heart attack at hospital and had to undergo a double heart bypass operation, believes Kirsty helped save his life.

He said: “She was so calm and collected, she knew exactly what to do. I could not even get up from the chair but Kirsty did everything right, without panicking herself or causing anyone else to panic.”

A pupil of Wilnecote High School, Kirsty was helped enormously by the fact that she had recently done a basic first aid course.

Tina said she wanted to nominate her daughter for the cinema tickets as a thank you.

She added: “Kirsty has also done a huge amount for Breast Cancer UK with AeT swim school including a 22 mile swim and she has helped with Wilnecote poppy appeal.”

Kirsty, currently studying for her GCSE exams, saw the film with her school friend Courtney Hendon. They were delighted to break off from revision to see Paddington, the blockbuster new movie based on Michael Bond’s classic children’s books about a marmalade sandwich loving adventurous bear.

Joshua Welch, of Glascote Heath, was also thrilled to be given tickets after he was nominated by his mum Nichola, who went with him to the see the film. She said she put forward his name because Joshua has done so much to help their family during what has been an extremely challenging few years.

Kingsbury School pupil Joshua, who celebrated his 12th birthday last week, helps to care for both his dad, Simon, 38, who has terminal brain cancer and his older brother, Ben, 13, who has autism and ADHD.

Nichola said: “He also took his younger sister Kaytee, who is only seven, to school and back every day to help me so I could care for his dad. He takes so much on and as a result he often misses out on things he would like to do as he puts the rest of our family’s needs first. He never complains about it either. That’s why I nominated him so he could have a treat all to himself and as a way of showing him how much we all appreciate what he does for us.”

Joshua said afterwards that he thoroughly enjoyed the film, adding: “It was a really special day for me.”

Mother and daughter duo Emma and Claire McCarthy, of Fazeley, also enjoyed some special time together in recognition of all the time Claire devotes to helping care for her special needs brother Oliver.

Emma said: “Oliver is three years younger than Claire and so highly dependent on our family unit that we tend to put him first whenever we go anywhere or do any activity. Claire never complains and is always so loving towards him, but this was a great chance for just the two of us to spend some time together and enjoy a pre-Christmas treat. It was a fabulous film and a great event all round, everyone was so friendly and welcoming.”

Claire agreed, saying she did not know much about Paddington before seeing the film: “But now he’s one of my favourite characters. It was really good.”

The movie, which tells the story of the adventures of the loveable bear, who was born in Peru and travelled all the way to London’s Paddington station. It features BAFTA winning actors Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent, as well as Dr Who star Peter Capaldi and Little Britain’s Matt Lucas. Ben Wishaw who starred in James Bond film, Skyfall, provides the voice of Paddington.

Other people nominated by their communities to receive tickets included the crossing patrol ladies outside Millfield Primary School, who “go above and beyond” in their mission to ensure the safe passage of their young charges on their way to and from school.

Also among the lucky cinema goers were members of the First Wilnecote Girl Guides and the Sacred Heart Cubs, led by Akela Andy Hitchings.

All the nominees were presented with their tickets by Father Christmas when they arrived at the cinema on Saturday and they were congratulated by local dignitaries including the Mayor.

Open daily, Ankerside is home to 60 stores, from fashion, health and beauty to services and food and drink, and has more than 700 parking spaces. More details at www.ankerside.co.uk

HUNDREDS of visitors saw Tamworth Castle as they may never have seen it before last weekend as the Castle By Candlelight event returned by popular demand.

The event saw visitors of all ages experiencing the Castle’s rooms, lit as they would have been in the days before electric lighting – with more than 300 candles used for illumination.

The event was on the theme ‘The History of Light’, with costumed guides and room stewards treating visitors to a series of demonstrations and interpretations on the use of light from fire through candles and gas up to electricity, covering both the practical and more inventive sources of illumination.

The event was heavily supported by the Friends of Tamworth Castle, with members of the group taking part in the costumed demonstrations and explanations.

In all, more than 300 visitors experienced Castle By Candlelight – with the huge majority of them commenting on how much they had enjoyed the event.

Castle by Candlelight Castle ran for more than 20 years until 2009 when it was decided to give it a break. It was brought back in a new format this year after a number of requests from the public.

Tamworth Borough Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob Pritchard, said: “We decided to bring back Castle By Candlelight after a lot of requests from people who had enjoyed it so much in the past.

“Visitors who came along to the new Castle By Candlelight told staff how much they had enjoyed it, there was a lot of interaction with the guides and Tamworth Castle looked beautiful, lit up by hundreds of candles.”

He added: “We are very please with how well the return of Castle By Candlelight was received by visitors who came along to enjoy it.”

CINDERELLA is only a matter of weeks away and excitement is building. But for one household, pantomime has become a family affair.

Tracey Hames-Sharp joined the Tamworth Pantomime Company last year with her 16 year old daughter Molly Sharp, and this year they return with leading roles.

Tracey Hames-Sharp with her 16 year old daughter Molly Sharp enjoying a meal.

Tracey is playing the part of the Fairy Godmother while Molly plays Cinderella’s lovable best friend Buttons at the Tamworth Assembly Rooms this Christmas.

Tracey said: “I am thrilled to be part of the Tamworth Pantomime Company, but it makes it so much more magical to be acting alongside my daughter.

“Molly and I have a special relationship; yes we do all the usual mother and daughter stuff, but we are also best friends and keep each other together.

“We both love drama so it’s fantastic being able to share this passion together. Molly is so talented at what she does and it’s wonderful to see her perform alongside me and this great cast.”

Molly’s first pantomime experience was last year when Tracey and her joined the cast of Dick Whittington. She played a smaller part, Juliet, but is looking forward to taking on the iconic role of Buttons this year.

Molly said: “I’m loving every minute of the pantomime, and I feel so lucky to be able to share the experience with a lovely set of people.

“Last year it was brilliant seeing our rehearsals transfer onto the stage, and I’m sure this year will be even better.

“The laughs and family spirit is priceless, and I can’t wait for Cinderella to begin.”

Cinderella follows the story of a girl treated badly by her Evil Stepmother and Ugly Sisters. When she runs into her Fairy Godmother (Tracey Hames-Sharp) her life changes forver. With the help of her best friend Buttons (Molly Sharp) she finds true love with Prince Charming – but will she live happily ever after?

THIS year’s Christmas lights switch-on is being hailed as the biggest and best, after more than 9,000 people flocked to Tamworth on Sunday as it was transformed into a winter wonderland.

For the first time, this year the switch-on took place on a Sunday. Another welcome new addition was a festive Christmas market, with more than 20 stalls along George Street, selling a range of Christmas gifts and novelties, local produce and festive food.

And the lights go on! - courtesy of David Easen at Mease Valley Photography

Live music, dance performances, fairground rides, a living Nativity, Christmas treasure hunt and a Dickensian street performer were just some of the attractions at this year’s switch-on event.

The fun started at 11am, with dozens of events taking place throughout the town centre during the day. The focus of the day’s proceedings was the stage in St Editha’s Square, sponsored by Touch FM. It hosted performances from a wide range of acts, including X-Factor contestants The Joys, Rotary Search For a Star runner-up George Radcliffe, Urban Fusion Dance Company, Tamworth Pantomime Company, Two Gates Primary School choir and Tamworth Voices.

The Community Café ran free arts and crafts activities, St Editha’s Church was packed with decorated Christmas trees and the ever-popular walkabout characters mingled with the crowds.

Worshippers from St Francis Church in Leyfields staged a live Nativity next to the Town Hall. Just down the road in Market Street, Fergus & Fogg Toy Emporium added to the festive feel with a snow machine and carol singers outside the shop.

Dozens of Santas took part in the Rotary Club Santa Stroll, with walks for able-bodied people, dog walkers, pushchairs and wheelchair users.

The climax of the festive fun was the big Christmas switch-on at 5pm. This year, Tamworth’s Christmas lights were switched on by Unwrap Tamworth at Christmas art competition winner Bethany Khan, Father Christmas and Mayor of Tamworth, Cllr Richard Kingstone.

The choir from St Editha’s Church then brought the event to a close in traditional festive style by leading the crowd in a Christmas carol sing-along.

Organisers plan to build on the success of this year’s event and hope to expand the Christmas market and entertainment next year and have been asking Tamworth Informed readers for their feedback on the event.

Mayor of Tamworth, Cllr Richard Kingstone, said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is one of the highlights of Tamworth’s year and this year’s event was truly amazing. The town was the busiest it has ever been for the switch-on and most people came and stayed all day.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in making the switch-on happen, and to everyone who came along to support it. The Christmas season has now well and truly started in Tamworth.”
