Still time for budding performers to step into the spotlight

August 6, 2015

IT’S not too late for budding actors, singers and musicians to step into the spotlight as part of an exciting new drama project which will culminate in live performances of an original show in Tamworth town centre.

I Am Drama is one of the 15 elements that make up I Am Tamworth – an ambitious 12-month initiative by Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts and Events team designed to encourage people to get creative across a diverse range of the arts.

It will give anyone who wishes to act, sing, dance or perform the unique opportunity to develop their skills alongside experts from Fired Up Theatre and Tamworth Repertory Company during a series of FREE weekly workshops.

Sessions will see participants helping to devise and perform a two-part play telling the Tales of Tamworth, which the budding thespians will perform outside in the town centre during the weekend of September 12 and 13, coinciding with Heritage Open Day on the Sunday.

Although the workshops are already underway, it’s not too late for more people to get involved. Fired Up Theatre’s Simon Quinn, who is leading the sessions, said: “Tamworth’s actors and writers have been combining their talents to devise a unique outdoor performance.

“With guidance from practitioners representing Fired Up Theatre and Tamworth Repertory Company, the newly formed ensemble have been putting together a storytelling theatre project; uniquely projecting fables and facts surrounding the rivers Anker and Tame, as well as acting monologues and plays in the guise of market traders from Tamworth’s bygone age.

“The good news for anyone who thinks they have missed out on getting involved in this project is that there is still room for more budding actors, writers and musicians to contribute to this exciting piece of work.”

The free workshops take place at Tamworth Town Hall every Tuesday evening between 6pm and 8pm until September 8. Participants will be able to learn skills in improvisation, physical theatre and storytelling, as well as meeting new people.

There is no need to book; anyone interested is invited to just turn up. All abilities are welcome and there is no need to audition.
