THE town’s shopping centre is inviting Tamworth families to join in with a host of arts and crafts next week, after teaming up with a community interest organisation to celebrate England’s national day.
On Monday 9 and Wednesday 11 April, not-for-profit group, Community Together will be heading to Ankerside Shopping Centre for fun-filled craft workshops ahead of St George’s Day on Monday 23 April.
Between 11am and 3pm, youngsters will have the chance to make their very own St George’s Day dragon using paper plates and dragon-themed decorations. Some of these will then be used as part of the town’s Mercian Mosaic, which will be unveiled in the castle grounds on Saturday 14 July.
Steve Hodgetts of Community Together, which is also part of the centre’s Operation Christmas campaign, said he is delighted to be able to deliver half-term workshops to Ankerside’s youngest visitors. “It’s so important to keep the kids occupied during the school holidays, so we’re really looking forward to coming to Ankerside for St George’s Day workshops.
“We’ll be talking to the children all about the national day and then helping them make their very own dragons to either take home or contribute to the Mercian Mosaic project,” Steve added.
Jeff Wigley, Ankerside Shopping Centre manager, said he is looking forward to welcoming Community Together back to the centre. “We’ve worked with Steve and his team for a number of years, most recently during the festive period for our annual Operation Christmas initiative, and we’re really pleased to be able to continue teaming up for activities during school breaks.
“As it’s nationally recognised, St George’s Day is an excellent topic for young ones to learn all about and we can’t wait to see how all their crafted dragons turn out. Plus, we will be looking out for their creations at the mosaic unveiling in July.
