Work due to start on new community sports pitch at Tamworth Enterprise College

Friday, 21st February 2020

Construction of a new 3G pitch for people of all ages, is about to start work at the end of the month, thanks to three-quarters of a million-pound sports project to create a full size, outdoor artificial grass sports pitch in Tamworth.

We reported in July last year that the new pitch will be constructed at Tamworth Enterprise College in Birds Bush Road, to replace the smaller, existing sand-based synthetic turf pitch.

The project will include new fencing, lighting, maintenance equipment and refurbished changing facilities.  The aim is that the pitch will create a high-quality facility to help raise standards in performance and grow participation in football for all ages, as well as developing a hub for girl’s football.

The £774,000 project has been made possible thanks to a £471,951 grant from the Premier League and The Football Association Facilities Fund and £300,000 in Section 106 money paid to Tamworth Borough Council.  As part of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, Section 106 funding is made up of contributions from developers in the area towards the costs of providing community, leisure and social infrastructure.

Cllr John Chesworth, the Cabinet Member for Culture and Operational Services, said: “This is an exciting project that is supported by the Premier League & FA Facilities Fund and the Football Foundation, in partnership with Tamworth Borough Council.

“The facility will operate from 9 am – 4 pm weekdays for the college pupils and from 4 pm till 10 pm weekdays for club and community use. During weekends the site will be open from 9 am – 9 pm for community use and club league fixtures. School holiday time will provide an excellent opportunity for community users, local clubs and council Sports Development Programmes to utilise this new outdoor facility.

“We can’t wait for the work to begin this month and look forward to a seeing the new pitch being used by the summer, to engage young people and adults in sports and helping to develop personal skills and confidence.”

The site will be serviced and maintained in a partnership between the landowner, Academies Enterprise Trust, and Tamworth Borough Council.

Pitch hire will be co-ordinated by Tamworth Enterprise College.

Gemma Simon, Principal of Tamworth Enterprise College said: “We are absolutely delighted to be the beneficiary of this investment that will see a brand new state-of-the-art new facility at Tamworth Enterprise College. The new pitch will provide a brilliant addition to our sports facilities and will help drive wider participation in football for all year groups, and with a particular focus on girls football.

“Off the back of the Women’s Football World Cup the new pitch provides us with an excellent opportunity to increase activity levels and raise standards in sporting performance across the board.”
