Shustoke celebrates £50,000 new facilities with a free sailing day

Monday, 23rd March 2015

SHUSTOKE Sailing Club will kick off a landmark year with free sailing for all as the club’s new clubhouse and changing facilities, funded by a £50,000 Sport England grant, is officially opened on Saturday 11 April.

From 10am local people of all ages and abilities are invited to give sailing a go on Shustoke Reservoir as Shustoke SC hosts the first of its three free 2015 Open Days to celebrate the extension and improvements to the club.

Shustoke were awarded a Sport England Inspired Facilities grant in August 2013 and over the past 18 months the club has worked tirelessly to extend and update the club’s changing and toilet facilities plus build a new training room.

The new training facilities will be named after the late Terry Booth, one of the founder members of the club, and will be opened by his wife, Marie along with Shustoke SC’s own former World Champion sailor, Holly Scott, who as a young teenager was one of the first females to win the Mirror World crown in 2007.

Now with the ribbon about to be cut, the club can’t wait get even more local people into sailing this year

Peter Maidment, Club Commodore, said: “It’s proven that people only stay in any sport if they enjoy it and having comfortable, good quality, modern facilities is a huge part. We’re really looking forward to helping more local people discover just what a sociable, accessible sport sailing really is and that all starts again on 11 April!”

All you need to try sailing at the Open Day is warm clothes, shoes you don’t mind getting wet and a towel. The club will provide everything else you need, with the added bonus of complimentary buffet and celebration cake.
