,mTAMWORTH shoppers have helped to raise more than £5,500 for local charities in just six months, after 16 organisations fundraised at the town’s shopping centre.

Between January and June this year, charities including Tamworth Sea Cadets, Cats Protection, St Giles Hospice and RAFA Tamworth visited Ankerside Shopping Centre to raise awareness and funds, which saw generous shoppers donate £5,525 to a number of worthwhile causes.

“Here at Ankerside, it is really important to us to be able to support charities, groups and organisations based in and around Tamworth, and it has been a great six months of fundraising at the centre,” said Jeff Wigley, Ankerside Shopping Centre Manager.

“Since January, 16 charities have had fantastic success whilst at Ankerside,” he said. “Macmillan Tamworth in particular had a brilliant visit to the centre, raising more than £750 with a tombola and clothing appeal. Plus, the town’s Dementia Action Alliance raised funds by hosting Tea and Twiddle knitting sessions at AB’s Coffee and Cakes and also Druckers, which we are now looking to make a monthly meet-up.

“Not only have we had charities coming into the centre to raise money, but we have also had organisations promoting awareness of various causes including the British Heart Foundation, Carers Hub and Tamworth Rotary Club.”

Some organisations’ fundraising has gone so well at Ankerside, they have decided to return for another charity day later in the year. “For the rest of the year, we already have a full calendar of groups coming into the centre to raise money, including Marie Curie, Youth Cancer Trust and Tamworth Samaritans as well as Operation Christmas, which we support every year by inviting shoppers to donate presents in the centre. Plus, Glascote Community Library will also be coming along to raise awareness of their volunteering opportunities too.

“£5,500 is a brilliant amount to be able to raise over six months and we can’t thank Ankerside shoppers enough for their generosity,” Jeff said. “We are looking forward to continuing our fundraising throughout the second half of this year and can’t wait to announce our annual total at the end of 2017.”
