Shire Leasing Helps School Pupils Gain Industry Experience

Thursday, 31st October 2019

A Tamworth-based company has provided work experience placements for more than 20 pupils from local schools at its head office over this past summer.

The initiative to offer work experience to young people was inspired by the outcome of the company’s ‘career talks’ in local schools.

Staff at Shire Leasing, who led the talks, were struck by the number of students struggling to find opportunities that would help them to secure future employment. They organised work experience in the legal, finance and IT departments, to help young people gain some of the necessary skills to start careers in their chosen fields.

Hemesh Chohan, a solicitor at Shire Leasing, said: “Today, there are barriers facing young people trying to take their first step on to the career ladder, it’s something I experienced myself before getting a break. There’s a fierce amount of competition to stand out and having high grades is no longer enough. Employers expect applicants to have excellent IT and communication skills, as well as experience in the working environment.

“The focus of these placements was on developing students’ skills and giving them tasks that they could discuss at any job interview. Some of the work that the students have completed has been implemented by us. We hope that when they are ready to enter employment, they could then point to this valuable contribution and use it to secure their dream job.

“These students are the next generation, the leaders of companies like ours and we take training and recruitment very seriously. It took the co-operation of every department to ensure that the work experience platform exists here and that ready-made programmes of work were in place to suit the skills of the individual.”

Chris Davis, head of careers at The Polesworth School, said, “We strongly recommend work experience to our students, as it delivers valuable, real-time knowledge while also helping them to stand out to potential employers. It has been great for our students to have had the opportunity to learn valuable skills at Shire Leasing to aid them in their future careers and I thank the whole team for both making our students welcome and for giving up their valuable time this summer. We very much look forward to working with Hemesh and his colleagues again.”

Shire Leasing aims to offer even more placements this coming year.
