Fire Service’s Christmas wish is to not see you during the holidays!

Friday, 21st December 2018

AS families come together to celebrate the holidays Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is wishing residents a Christmas free from fire in their homes.

The Service has been to dozens of incidents during the holidays over the years, most of which could have been prevented, including some tragic deaths. SFRS has therefore released a video to highlight firefighters’ Christmas wish; not to see you over the holidays.

Firefighters do not want to see you affected by tragedy this year and are asking the public to follow their advice to ensure you have a safe Christmas and New Year.

  1. Never leave cooking unattended. When you’re spending time with loved ones it is easy to get distracted but please ensure you pay attention when cooking at all times. If you need to leave the room take any saucepans off the heat and turn off the hob.
  2. Don’t drink too much and cook. Cooking whilst heavily intoxicated can be extremely dangerous. Many people like a drink over the holidays but alcohol can reduce your attention and increases the chances of you falling asleep whilst the cooker is on.
  3. Ensure all your Christmas lights have the British Safety standard logo and are not damaged in any way (including frayed wires). Also make sure they are switched off before going to bed or leaving the house. Don’t overload sockets
  4. Always extinguish candles before leaving the house or going to bed
  5. Don’t drink and drive. If you’re going out to celebrate or visiting friends make sure you have a safe way to get home. Ensure there is a designated driver or get a taxi.
  6. Check on elderly relatives and make sure they are celebrating safely
  7. Keep presents away from exits and ensure you have a clear escape route out of the property
  8. Do not take batteries out of smoke alarms for toys

Director of Prevent and Protect Glynn Luznyj said: “We know fire safety might not be at the forefront of people’s minds at this time of year but as we have already seen some tragic incidents throughout the country recently we are really keen to ensure everyone stays safe throughout the holidays.

“By following these simple tips you can have a fun filled Christmas whilst ensuring you don’t see us.

“This video stars one of our own firefighters, Bryan Brindley, who has kindly volunteered to sing the Christmas classic in order to get the message out there to keep our community safe.”
