MUMS-TO-BE, their families and health professionals will have the chance to visit Samuel Johnson Community Hospital’s award-winning maternity unit in Lichfield
The opportunity is during an open morning taking place on Saturday 14th March, between 10am and 12noon.
The event will include tours, with rooms set up to show the home-from-home atmosphere, en suite facilities and birthing pools. Workshops on breast feeding and water births will run throughout the morning. Alternative therapy demonstrations, including reflexology and aromatherapy will be available with taster sessions. Parents who have used the service will be on hand to talk about their experiences.
Unit Team Leader Julie Baker said: “We’re proud of our unit and the staff – they promote normality in childbirth and focus on embracing the family to ensure a positive birth experience and supportive introduction to early parenthood. We want to share our philosophy of care with as many people as possible through the open event.
“Through our efforts to promote a positive birthing experience, we are the only stand-alone birth centre in the area achieving rates of over 60% for water births and over 85% for breast feeding.”
The Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust maternity department – including the Lichfield unit – won a prestigious national award for excellence in maternity care in 2014. CHKS, the UK’s leading independent provider of healthcare intelligence and quality improvement, judged the quality of care at Burton Hospitals as the best out of 148 NHS maternity providers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
