PRIME Minister Boris Johnson has announced that England is set to remove all legal limits on people’s social contact by 21 June.
In a speech to the House of Commons, The Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson MP has announced that there will be a staged approach to re-opening the Country and that it will be based on a number of safeguards and checks.
Mr Johnson insisted that the dates in his four-stage plan were not set in stone and were the earliest possible point at which the restrictions could be lifted.
After schools reopen on 8 March, with some outdoor restrictions lifted by 29 March, Mr Johnson said the next step will be to reopen beer gardens and hairdressers in England from 12 April at the earliest.
The timetable is as follows:
Step one
8 March
- all students return to schools and colleges, and school clubs can resume
- Secondary school students will be required to wear masks in class as well as communal areas
- People can meet one other person outside for recreation, not just exercise
- Care home residents allowed one regular named visitor
- Stay at home order remains in place.
29 March at the earliest
- Outdoor gatherings of up to six people or two households allowed, including meeting in private gardens
- Outdoor sports facilities such as tennis and basketball courts and outdoor swimming pools allowed to reopen; organised outdoor sports can resume
- Stay at home order ends but people encouraged to stay local wherever they can
- Work from home wherever possible
- No overseas travel.
Step 2
12 April at the earliest
- Non-essential retail, hairdressers, nail salons, gyms and outdoor areas in hospitality venues (such as beer gardens) set to reopen - along with libraries, museums, zoos and theme parks.
- Self-contained accommodation will reopen, but people will only be able to stay with members of their household.
Step 3
17 May at the earliest
- Most social contact rules to be lifted, as well as limited mixing indoors.
Step 4
21 June at the earliest
- All legal limits on social contact set to be removed, with the remaining sectors of the economy reopened.
- Nightclubs allowed to re-open.
- Weddings are the only events where some restrictions may have to remain.
The PM said his roadmap would “guide us cautiously but irreversibly towards reclaiming our freedoms”.
He said the threat from the virus “remains substantial”, but added: “We are able to take these steps because of the resolve of the British people and the extraordinary success of our NHS in vaccinating more than 17.5 million people across the UK.”
Mr Johnson said lifting lockdown would result in “more cases, more hospitalisations and sadly more deaths” regardless of when measures are relaxed, “because there will always be some vulnerable people who are not protected by the vaccines”.
What do you think to the announcement?
