Fire Service reminds people to register their appliances

Thursday, 24th January 2019

TODAY is Register My Appliance Day (January 24) which is supported by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The day is a national drive which urges the public to take those few minutes to fill out a simple form and help keep their loved ones safe.

Electrical appliances can be subject to recalls at any time, by registering these products you are ensuring you will be alerted if there is a problem and it needs to be returned or repaired.

Faulty and damaged electricals are one of the leading causes of fires in the home and often they can be prevented.

Remember though, that although this is supported by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, residents from anywhere can register their appliances.

In Staffordshire between July and December 2018 there were 157 dwelling fires caused by a fault in an electrical appliance or piece of equipment and 24 blazes caused by faulty leads or cables.

Group Manager Jim Bywater said: “Electrical fires can completely destroy homes and businesses and put lives at risk. It only takes a few minutes to register your appliances and this can potentially save a life.

“It is really simple to do and you will get alerts when one of your appliances has an issue, otherwise how would you know that your electrical item could be putting you at risk? You may not know until it’s too late so visit www.registermyappliance.org.uk and keep you and your loved ones safe.”
