Police appeal after disorder at football derby

Friday, 20th November 2015

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after disorder broke out before the Villa v Birmingham League Cup match at Villa Park on 22 September.

Prior to the game, there were minor pockets of disorder involving a small minority of supporters attending the local derby.

Detectives investigating these offences seized CCTV and have worked hard to identify those involved.

Sergeant Mick Wilkinson, from the Force Football Unit, said:  “A significant policing plan was in place which meant there was little cross-over between the two sets of fans before and after the game which helped to reduce any confrontations. We also worked closely with our offender management unit to identify and visit some individuals before the match.

“However, the behaviour displayed by this small number of grown men is as disappointing as it is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated.

“We would urge anyone who witnessed this disorder, or anyone who can identify those involved, to contact us immediately.”

Anyone with information can contact Sergeant Wilkinson on 101. Alternatively, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
