Petition Needs More Signatures

A Government e-petition launched calling for traffic calming measures at the junction of Overwoods Rd and Trinity Rd, Freasley needs more signatures.

The petition was created by Angie Walker, the mother of Dion Walker-Smith who sadly lost his life in a collision at the junction on 6th December last year. Angie’s Sister-in-law and Nephew also lost their lives in the collision. At the time of this article the petition only has 1,858 signatures. Any petitioner securing more than 100,000 signatures will expect a debate in the House of Commons and so many more signatures are needed before the petition closes on 28th July this year.

Angie has said:
“After my son, nephew and sister-in-law were all involved in a fatal car accident at this horrendous junction, things need to change, there have been many accidents at this junction over the years and now safety measures are needed to prevent families suffering the way we are.

Since the collision in December there has been lots of talk from on social media and in the press in relation to improvements being made at the scene. Now is the time to sign the petition and show your support for change.

Suggestions to improve the safety at the junction are;

  1. Speed limit reduction with the introduction of speed enforcement cameras.
  2. The installation of traffic lights.
  3. In conjunction with 1 and 2 above, more street lighting to be introduced.

  1. It needs new road markings and maybe some cats eyes on the road so you can actually see it!!! Curb is so low so it’s hard to distinguish what’s curb and what’s road, and cannot see the central line when driving down there. I hate havig to driving down there most evenings after work :(

  2. All, just to let you know that following any collision of this nature a ‘Community Impact Assessment’ is carried out. This is as well as problems to road layout etc being highlighted to the Highways Agency / County Council. Accident statistics for the area ‘should’ be taken in to consideration. All of that along with this petition should get some changes made.
    Please keep sharing far and wide. We need 100,000 signatures to force a review.

  3. Lighting is for pedestrians, cars have lights on them. HGVs are restricted to 56mph, so at full pelt they can only drive at 6mph above the speed limit. Most people in cars seem to get stuck behind a lorry driving at far less than that though. It’s a wide, almost straight road and the junction in question has excellent visibility in both directions. It does not need speed cameras nor traffic lights.

    I understand why this petition was made, and I’m sorry that the accident happened, but I really don’t think that anybody should be making decisions on what traffic calming measures should be put in place until someone who actually knows what they’re talking about determines how it happened and thus how it could have been avoided.

  4. I can only assume that the petition is the first hurdle to get the discussions in place then they will look at all the pros and cons before coming to the right decision. I do believe this is not first accident at this spot correct me if I’m wrong. In a society of where health and safety gone mad we shouldn’t have to wait till further loss of life….or does health and safety only come into play if it doesn’t cost too much

  5. Health and safety, generally speaking, only comes into play if it’s logical. This isn’t necessarily logical. Like I say, I don’t know exactly what led to the accident, but it’s entirely possible that it was driver error not attributed to speed.

  6. I think that junction should be made safer to pull out of . Traffic lights would be a blessing . And some people need to remember a whole family has been destroyed on this road and NO reports have been realeased saying who or what was to blame . But common sence and good eyesight tells us that some assistance is needed there .

  7. I don’t believe that the speed limit needs dropping. This is a long, straight stretch of road with good visibility - having us all crawl up it at 40mph isn’t the solution and fatal accidents can still happen at that speed. The best answer is probably traffic lights with a sensor on Overwoods Road so that the light only turns red on the main road when there are cars waiting at the junction.
