Plans for a new partnership to improve the quality, speed of delivery and sheer breadth of Staffordshire County Council’s construction, maintenance and operations programme was agreed today.

The council’s Cabinet approved Amey as its preferred delivery partner for the next 10 years – with the option to extend for a further ten years.

Mark Winnington, the Cabinet Member for Economy and Infrastructure, said the partnership demonstrated a new way of working, geared to supporting the growth and success of the county.

Amey has agreed to deliver smarter, quicker ways of working, keeping people better-informed on everything from potholes to major projects  –  and saving taxpayers £21.5 million in the first five years through its own efficiencies.

Mark said : “We have negotiated hard and negotiated differently to get the very best deal for the county, the council and our communities.

“The fact  we can deliver this at a reduced cost to Staffordshire taxpayers of £21.5 million in the next five years is also truly remarkable.

“Instead of just looking at tendering for a traditional contract, we looked at what greater value we could achieve, what better services could be delivered and ultimately what better offer companies could bring to the table.

“This partnership is unique in that it builds on what is good from the more traditional highways contracts, but recognises to the wider goals of the county council to bring jobs, growth and prosperity to the county without compromising on what is really important to the people of Staffordshire.”

Staffordshire County Council will keep a controlling 60 per cent voting rights in the partnership.

Mark added:  “This partnership too is about protecting the improvements and the £50 million investment we have already made and ensuring we continue to build on this.

“Amey consistently performed well on the offering, on the cost and importantly they get what we want to do. They get the fact we want to bring jobs, investment and prosperity to Staffordshire and they get too that we want to do this by supporting local people.

“This ground-breaking partnership is a undoubtedly a fantastic deal for the county and for taxpayers.”
