Housebuilder supports Staffordshire village’s open gardens event

A VILLAGE near Lichfield is holding an Open Gardens event this weekend to raise money for the church and a series of ‘green’ projects – boosted by a £1,000 donation by a local housebuilder.

Bellway West Midlands, which is building new homes at Sheasby Park in Fradley, is supporting the village’s Open Gardens Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Some 11 village gardens will be open to the public and St Stephen’s Church will also be open for homemade refreshments and drinks.

There will also be live music in the church, and on Sunday the Ryknild Rabble Morris Dancers will be dancing in the church grounds, plus two other gardens.

Inside, the church will be decorated by Fradley Flower Club and the results of a children’s art competition will also be displayed.

Marie Richards, Sales Director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “We’re building two, three and four-bedroom properties at Sheasby Park in Fradley.

“But we’re about contributing to the community as well as building houses so we’re delighted to be able to help out with the Open Gardens event.”

One of the Open Gardens event organisers, Sandy Carruthers, said profits from the weekend will be shared between the church and a variety of small ‘green’ projects to enhance Fradley.

Sandy said: “It’s extremely generous of Bellway to support us in this way and we’d like to thank them for their kind donation.

“We hope people will come along on the weekend to support us as well.”

She added: “Our gardens are varied in size and have lots to offer both adults and children.

“There will be several children’s quizzes held in a variety of gardens to add to the enjoyment.”

Entry programmes priced £5 can be bought from Fradley Post Office in advance, or at the church and from any participating garden on the day.

Entry is free for accompanied children under 16.

The programme will entitle visitors to enjoy the gardens on both days if desired.

Only disability dogs can be accepted in gardens.

Free parking will be clearly marked.
