No Confidence motion – what happens next?

Tuesday, 15th January 2019

PRIME Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal was defeated this evening by 230 votes and now, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has tabled a motion of no confidence in the government. So what happens now?

The vote itself will be held on Wednesday at 7pm following a day of debate in the House of Commons.

MPs will be asked to vote on a simple motion: “That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty’s Government.”

As a result, Mrs May now has less than 24 hours to fight for her job and convince Members of Parliament that she is the lady to lead the country.

If she fails to convince MP’s to vote in favour of her Government then there are a few options, most drastically a General Election could be called.
