Proposals to close Minor Injuries Unit overnight

Robert Peel Hospital Closed

PLANS have been revealed to reduce the overnight service at Sir Robert Peel Hospital’s Minor Injuries Unit, meaning that the unit will be unavailable to public for 11 hours each night.

Members of Tamworth Borough Council’s Healthier and Safer Scrutiny Committee will this week be formally informed of the plans.

A representative from the South East Staffordshire and Seisdon Peninsula Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be attending the meeting at Marmion House on Thursday, September 17, to speak to councillors about the CCG’s proposals for future provision at the town’s community hospital.

The commissioning group is recommending that the current 24-hour service ceases to operate between the hours of 9pm and 8am. In its report on the proposals, the CCG cited low attendance figures of the Minor Injuries Unit during the overnight period (seeing on average one patient every two hours) and a duplication of services.

If the plans are approved, patients would be diverted to the Pharmacy Common Ailments Service, Out of Hours GP service – which runs at the Sir Robert Peel Hospital between 6.30pm and 8am Monday to Friday and 24 hours on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays - NHS 111 telephone service, or to their main A&E department at Burton or Good Hope hospitals.

Similar proposals have been put forward for the Minor Injuries Unit at Samuel Johnson Hospital in Lichfield.

Cllr Andrew James, Chairman of Tamworth Borough Council’s Healthier and Safer Scrutiny Committee, said: “South East Staffordshire and Seisdon Peninsular CCG are attending Thursday’s scrutiny meeting to present the rationale behind their proposed changes to the Minor Injuries Unit at Sir Robert Peel Hospital.

“It is important for members of the committee, as both elected members for Tamworth and residents who may use the MIU, to understand the business case ahead of the CCG’s public consultation – which is expected to run from September 21 to October 18.

“It is also important to emphasise that the proposed changes to the opening hours are being put forward by South East Staffordshire and Seisdon Peninsular CCG and not Tamworth Borough Council.”

The Healthier and Safer Scrutiny Committee meeting takes place at 6pm on Thursday, September 17, in Marmion House, Lichfield Street. Although the meeting is open to members of the public, who may attend to watch the proceedings, questions can not be taken from visitors on this occasion.

  1. So minor injuries can now go to good hope, put more pressure on A&E and then have tons of complaints about long wait times & more pressure on staff for a faster, higher turnover! Also poor people who are unable to drive ect get the added bonus of a nice big taxi Charge, that’s if they don’t start calling 999 for a free faster service 😡 well done, complete morons. 😐

  2. Just don’t understand this town. We knocked down Tamworth general hospital with an accident and emergency and built the peel hospital with a minor injuries… Now we get nothing. Like most people between the hours of 9pm and 8 am is when you need this service!!! The town is growing and basic services like these will now be shifted to good hope or Burton.. Putting more pressure onto these hospitals.. Absolutely disgusting

  3. The old hospital was knocked down so we could have a bigger and better hospital for Tamworth. At the time we were told that Tamworth people wouldn’t have to travel to good hope or Burton hospital for treatment. It’s disgusting that there closing most of it down so we have to travel to other hospitals. It makes you wonder why they bothered building it in the first place, and their going back on what they said before they built it

  4. When the hospital was discussed years ago we were told there could possibly be a maternity unit, extensive operating theatre etc,a real state of the art hospital to support our ever growing town yet now we have to listen to this! No minor injuries unit at night when many need it most, not everyone has access to transport to travel …police station being demolished.. i look forward to a reduction in my council tax!!

  5. It’s terrible I broke my elbow in Dec at night and the peel where brilliant, quick and efficent. I had to go to Good hope because where it was and I was there waiting without seeing anyone for 6 hours. Waiting for staff to come onto shift to see the patients that didn’t come in an ambulance. Nhs is discusting! And not worth it! I’d rather pay for health care privately then go back. I’ve since transfered all my care to burton because Good hope 100% stick by its nickname of NO HOPE! and they want to add more pressure, great one politicans!!

  6. How Disgusting is this for Tamworth People to be treated like this. What is the point of the hospital being there for.People take I’ll during the night too not everyone can get to good hope but to close our hospital at night thats on our door step is pathetic.
