Chance for new and expectant mums to help improve local maternity services

Sunday, 23rd February 2020

THE Together We’re Better health and care partnership has been running several maternity focus groups across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent throughout January and February.

There are now two extra dates planned for late February and the partnership is inviting new mums, expectant mums, people thinking about having a baby and relevant maternity staff, to attend and share their views and experiences of local maternity services.

The partnership, which is made up of NHS and local government organisations, alongside independent and voluntary sector groups, will use this work to form part of the Together We’re Better Maternity Transformation Programme and the feedback gathered will help to inform and improve maternity services in local areas.

Mothers and midwives from across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have so far told Together We’re Better about a variety of different experiences; praising staff for their hard work and dedication, but saying that their experience would be better if they had seen the same doctors and midwives throughout their pregnancy and after birth. We’ve also heard a lot about mental health issues during pregnancy and after birth, for both the mother and partner, amongst a wide range of other areas where things are working well and where services could be improved.

Heather Johnstone, Senior Responsible Officer for the Together We’re Better Maternity Transformation programme, said: “During Summer 2019, we held a 12-week public conversation across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to understand what is working well, what can be improved and what is important to local people when considering health and care services. These focus groups are now helping us to further understand the experiences of new mothers and pregnant women, to identify how we can improve services in the area. We are looking to speak to people who are currently using maternity services, have used maternity services in the last 12 months or are planning to have a baby, as well as those who work in maternity services.”

Each of the focus groups will follow the same format, so those who are interested in attending only need to book a place at one of the events. Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. You can Register here

Dates and locations of the focus groups are:

  • 27 February 2020 – 12.30pm-2pm, Wombourne Leisure Centre, Ounsdale Road, Wombourne, WV5 8BJ
  • 28 February 2020 – 12.30pm-2pm, Leyfields Children’s Centre, Masefield Drive, Tamworth, B79 9JB

Together We’re Better has several programmes for which it is developing new models of care to deliver its vision of “Working with you to make Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent the healthiest places to live and work.” Each programme is focussed on its own aims and objectives to ensure local people have access to high quality, sustainable services for the future.
