The craze for loom bands has hit a new level today after bids on eBay for a dress made entirely of the small, colourful, rubber bands hits £169, 300, with four days to go.

The auction for the dress has reached £169,300. (At 9pm, 11/07/14)

Loom bands appear to be this summers craze for children and adults alike and can be seen for sale everywhere you turn.

Many different designs for bracelets have been seen but this takes the craze to a whole new level with a dress being made entirely of the bands.

The dress, which is made to fit girls size four to six and has been weaved from 20,000 of the rubber loops, bracelets and charms, was listed by a Wrexham woman who said she was ‘shocked’ at the level of interest.

Helen Wright told WalesOnline that she enlisted the help of a friend to weave the dress after her 12-year-old daughter Sian gave her the idea.

‘My friend Katherine physically made it because she’s out of work and gets bored,’ she said.

‘I said “why don’t we make a dress from loom bands” and Katherine said she’d be happy do do it because she’s too ill to work.

‘It was made as a novelty and we never intended it to be worn.’

Loom bands first became popular in 2011 after Michigan inventor Cheong Choon Ng created the Rainbow Loom, a tool that allows children to weave rubber bands into jewellery.

The sale of this dress has seen a number of other ‘sellers’ offering to make a dress out of the colourful rubber bands

Many ‘copy cat’ sellers have placed dresses for sale on the auction site.
