On your marks for new weekly run for children in Tamworth – and the best part, it’s free!
An exciting new project which gives children the chance to take part in weekly organised runs is launching in Tamworth this autumn – and it’s completely free of charge.
Tamworth Borough Council’s Sports Development team has joined forces with the charity Kids Run Free, which puts on organised running events for children.
From October 18, the charity will be organising a weekly run in the Castle Grounds every Saturday morning for children up to 16 years old, of all abilities. Children taking part can run for as short or long a distance as they wish, to suit their age and ability.
Kids Run Free started three years ago, with the aim of organising regular runs for children to encourage them to take part in exercise and stay healthy, at no cost. Around 3,500 children are now regularly taking part in the runs, which are held mainly across the Midlands.
It is hoped that the first Tamworth run will attract a large number of children, and that they will continue to take part each week. Each time a child completes a race, they will receive a sticker. After completing 10 races, they will be able to claim their free exclusive Kids Run Free gift.
To get involved, children just need to be registered online before taking part. To register, please go to the website www.kidsrunfree.co.uk then go along to the Castle Grounds for 8.45am on Saturday October 18.
Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Community Development, said: “This is an excellent initiative which gives children the opportunity to get involved in organised fitness activities completely free of charge. We are delighted to be involved with Kids Run Free, and I would encourage as many parents as possible to sign their children up for this great project.”
