Just 98 days until IRONMAN® 70.3 Staffordshire

March 8, 2015

From today (Sunday) there is just 98 days until the inaugural IRONMAN® 70.3 Staffordshire which takes place in the county this summer.

Thousands have already signed up to take part, including Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and TV presenter Jonathan Ross.

This inaugural event has also seen huge local support with 310 Staffordshire residents committed to tackle the challenge of an IRONMAN® 70.3, all of who will be under starters orders at 7am on Sunday 14th June.

The event which takes places through the four districts and boroughs of Cannock Chase, Lichfield, East Staffordshire and Stafford will consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run.

It is already being billed as one of the fastest, flattest courses on the IRONMAN® 70.3 European Tour and will culminate on June 14 at the historic Shugborough Estate.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, Environment & Transport, said: “The event is a huge opportunity to showcase our wonderful county and will be fantastic for tourism, the local economy and residents.

“As we start the 100 day countdown today we are confident this will prove a fantastic edition to the county’s sporting and tourism calendar.”

Kevin Stewart, Managing Director IRONMAN UK & Ireland, said: “We are extremely excited to be staging an IRONMAN® 70.3 for the first time in Staffordshire. The county offers a perfect platform and has already attracted an incredible 1,256 first time athletes to the sport.”

Places for individuals sold out in minutes, but entries are still available for athletes either as a team relay or as an individual through the TriClub Programme.

This exciting new initiative offers triathlon clubs the opportunity for its members to enter as individuals but their results are all combined as a team in a bid to quality for the inaugural IRONMAN® European Club Championships in September 2016. IRONMAN® 70.3 Staffordshire is 1 of only 10 qualifier events in Europe. Tri Clubs need to enter (for free) by Friday 13th March.

Children aged 3-14 can also be part of the action by entering the IRONKIDS run event on Saturday 13th September, the day before the main event. Distances vary from 500 metres to 2km according to age. For further information and entry on this fun focused event, please visit www.ironkids.co.uk
