Free Sailing this Saturday.

Tuesday, 1st April 2014

Tamworth Sailing Club is inviting you and your family to come and enjoy a FREE taste of sailing as the club celebrates the landmark opening of its brand new £45,000 training facilities on Saturday 5 April.

The new training room and storage facilities, funded in part by a £35,280 grant from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities programme, will play a huge part in Tamworth SC being able to offer even more local people more opportunities to get into sailing.

The free sailing tasters take place from 10am to 3pm, all-comers being taken afloat by experienced instructors and sailors, with the official opening of the new facilities at 11am.

Tamworth SC is an RYA Training Centre meaning it conforms to the highest standards of safety and quality, and it will be running an ever wider variety of sailing courses to suit all ages and experience levels to take advantage of the new facilities this year.

Debbie Pearce, Tamworth SC Commodore, explains:

“The club plans to increase the number of training courses we offer each year and also to invite more community involvement, from local groups, schools etc. We want to build on being on RYA OnBoard club too by getting more youngsters learning to sail and sailing regularly.

“The new training room, improved storage for our training equipment and workshop area were crucial in enabling us to comfortably cater for more people at the same time, while also providing first class facilities to make sure our boats, equipment and sailors are looked after as best as we possibly can.

“Sailing is still often perceived as an expensive sport, but a family can come and sail with us for just over £3 a week. We’re very keen to encourage increased take up in sailing and try to make the sport as enjoyable and accessible as possible for all.”

All anyone wishing to take advantage of the free tasters will need is warm clothes, old trainers, and a towel, the club will supply everything else you need and refreshments will be available.

Meanwhile Tamworth’s adult RYA Start Sailing course gets underway on 14 May, with another course scheduled for September. RYA Start Sailing introduces people to the basics and give them the best first experience in the sport, while also providing opportunities for them to then stay involved and keep improving their skills at friendly, welcoming sailing clubs.

The new training room and storage and workshop facilities total around 100sqm and from initial planning to final build took about two years to complete. Located within Kingsbury Water Park, the buildings are designed to withstand flooding, which the park is prone to from time to time.
