Free energy saving advice on offer in town centre event

Monday, 21st January 2019

RESIDENTS are being offered free advice and information on saving money and keeping warm in the home at a mobile ‘Fantastic Home Exhibition’ in St. Editha’s Square on Tuesday, January 22, from 10am to 2pm.

As part of national Big Energy Saving Week, the event will be hosted by Home Energy Advice Tamworth (HEAT) – a scheme run by Tamworth Borough Council in partnership with Marches Energy Agency and Beat the Cold.

Advisors will be on hand to deal with a range of queries from members of the public and give out money-saving freebies such as energy monitors.

Many people will be feeling the pinch after Christmas, with energy price rises and cold weather on the way. Often people don’t know they can save hundreds of pounds by changing energy supplier, and access extra money such as the £140 Warm Home Discount.

Thousands of Tamworth residents could benefit from a £140 rebate as the Warm Home Discount scheme is rolled out to new energy suppliers.

Offered by energy suppliers, many schemes are now open and operate on a first-come-first-served basis. Many smaller suppliers are involved in the scheme this year for the first time. Residents are being urged to attend the Fantastic Home Exhibition next week or contact Home Energy Advice Tamworth (HEAT) on 0800 0432 815 or email heat@tamworth.gov.uk for more information.

The Warm Home Discount is available to those on a low income and in receipt of certain means-tested benefits.

Eligibility criteria for people may also include:

  • Your household energy supplier on July 8, 2018, was part of the scheme
  • A member of your household receives employment-related benefits
  • You are over 65
  • You have a disability
  • You live with a child under 18
  • You spend a significant portion of your income on energy bills.

Energy Saving Week 2019 is a national Citizen’s Advice campaign to help consumers understand their energy use, cut their bills and get the financial support they are entitled to.

Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Communities & Partnerships, said: “The health and wellbeing of our residents is one of our top priorities. Big Energy Saving Week is an ideal opportunity to meet with advisors and find out what financial support is available.

“HEAT can provide help to more households than ever before in Tamworth. Join the Fantastic Home Exhibition next week or contact Home Energy Advice Tamworth (HEAT) on 0800 0432 815 for more information.”
