THE Rotary Club of Tamworth are offering free blood pressure checks in Tamworth this weekend to help combat stroke.
Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Stroke Association have teamed up to help people in Tamworth get their blood pressure tested.
They will be providing free blood pressure tests in Ankerside Shopping Centre on Saturday 25th February between 11am and 3pm to raise awareness of the link between high blood pressure and stroke.
High blood pressure is a contributing factor in around half of strokes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. As well as having a blood pressure check, local residents in Tamworth will also receive guidance on how to keep it under control and reduce their stroke risk.
Tamworth Rotary Representative, Kyle Raffo said: “Having a stroke can be devastating but people can reduce their risk significantly by paying attention to their blood pressure. Rotary is proud to support the Stroke Association’s Know Your Blood Pressure campaign because it is both simple and effective.
“The test takes a moment to do and potentially, it could save your life. Last year the Stroke Association held 1680 events around the country and this year they are keen to reach even more people.”
Alexis Wieroniey, Deputy Director of Policy and Influencing at the Stroke Association, said: “Having a regular blood pressure check is so important. For every 10 people diagnosed with high blood pressure, seven remain undiagnosed and untreated – this is more than 5.5 million people in England alone.
“Many people have high blood pressure without realising it because it often has no symptoms. High blood pressure is far more common than you would think and it can be deadly, but it is treatable. With events like this, together we can conquer stroke.”
Ankerside Centre Manager, Jeff Wigley, said he was pleased to be able to welcome the Rotary Club of Tamworth and the Stroke Association to the centre. “Having your blood pressure checked is vitally important,” said Jeff. “I’m delighted that we’re able to provide space to for the crucial checks to take place. A visit to Ankerside this weekend could make a huge difference to your health.”
In addition to the event taking place on 25th February, there will be blood pressure checks throughout the year. To find your nearest blood pressure event, you can visit www.stroke.org.uk/kybp.
