Entertainment to suit all tastes in jam-packed April line-up

March 24, 2015

THE stage is set for an impressive variety of drama, music and entertainment in Tamworth this April.

With a range of shows to suit all tastes. Boasting everything from wrestling to Mary Poppins, the exciting line-up of events is sure to include something for everyone.

The jam-packed April calendar kicks off with Tamworth Arts Club’s latest production Sweeney Todd; The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical thriller will be performed across five days from Tuesday, April 7th to Saturday, April 11th at Landau Forte Academy QEMS in Ashby Road.

Audiences will be taken on a thrilling ride as London barber Sweeney Todd begins a murderous rampage in 19th century London from the room he rents out above Mrs Lovett’s pie shop. The gruesome plot thickens when Mrs Lovett starts hiding the minced human flesh of Todd’s victims inside the meat pies she sells to London’s unsuspecting citizens.

Sweeney Todd; The Demon Barber of Fleet Street promises to be a delight for the senses, with beautiful music, an emotionally-charged storyline and dark comedy.

Tickets cost £14 standard, £12.50 concessions, or £50 for a group ticket based on two standard and two concessions.

Special VIP tickets can be purchased for the Thursday evening at a cost of £18.95, to include arrival and interval drinks, a finger buffet and an opportunity to meet the cast on stage.

The rest of the month’s action takes place at Tamworth Assembly Rooms, kicking off with the highly anticipated return of WrestleForce’s Ready to Rumble on Friday, April 10th.

Featuring five spectacular matches with heavyweight powerhouses, dazzling highflyers and beautiful divas, the live American-style professional wrestling show packs more than a little punch.

Also returning as part of the entertainment is the over the top ‘Rumble’ which will see a new wrestler entering the ring every two minutes until just one remains. That contender will earn themselves a championship match at this year’s Halloween Havoc. Tickets for Ready to Rumble are priced at £12/£10 concessions.

There’s one for the children on Monday, April 13th with a day of musical madness to break up the Easter holiday boredom.

The Mary Poppins Workshop will feature scenes, songs and dances from popular musicals. Youngsters aged between eight and 18 will get the opportunity to learn a range of techniques and skills, such as musicality, devising, projection, expression and characterisation.

The workshop takes place between 10am and 4pm and participants are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing and sensible footwear and take their own lunch and refreshments. Parents are required to fill out and return a consent form ahead of the event. Tickets are priced at £12.

Some of Tamworth’s finest singers will take to the Assembly Rooms stage on Wednesday, April 15th in the Tamworth Voices Choir Show. A contemporary twist on the traditional choir, the Voices will cover a range of styles to get audiences leaping into spring. Tickets for the concert are available for just £4.

Roy Chubby Brown is back by popular demand on Saturday, April 18th with a show that is strictly for adults only. Too rude for TV, ‘the world’s most outrageous comedian’ has been splitting sides across the country for decades and is a firm favourite among Tamworth audiences.  Not for the faint-hearted, Brown is as rude, crude and politically incorrect as it gets. Tickets are priced at £21.

The month will be rounded off with two nights of live music, starting on Friday, April 24th, when music lovers are invited to check out the local band scene. The Band Night line-up features Driven Like the Snow, Kirsty Clarke and headliners The Youngs. Entry is £4.

Then on Saturday, April 25th, a day of patriotic celebrations in the Castle Grounds will finish with a flag-waving sing-along at a Grand St George’s Day Concert.

Presented by Tamworth Lifeboats and featuring the popular Amington Brass Band, the fundraising concert will include many of the favourite feel-good band tunes, perfect to get audiences involved. Tickets for this performance are priced at £10.

Tickets for all shows are available online at www.tamworthassemblyrooms.co.uk, in person from Tamworth Tourist Information Centre in Corporation Street or by calling the Box Office on 01827 709618. A transaction fee of £1 is payable on all online and telephone bookings.
