EXTRA Christmas markets run in Tamworth throughout December have been a great success – with stallholders reporting bustling trade and a happy and relaxed atmosphere, despite some wet and windy weather.
Tamworth Borough Council teamed up with Ankerside Shopping Centre and market operator LSD Promotions Ltd in the run-up to Christmas to create a seasonal Santa trail for youngsters – complete with festive walkabout characters and a Treasure Hunt to spot elves hidden on participating market stalls and some Ankerside shops, as well as in the Market Place on St Editha’s Square.
Children were asked to note the location of the elves and then drop the completed entry form in to Santa’s grotto in Ankerside to be entered into a free prize draw.
To add to the festive atmosphere on Saturday December 19, parking was free at council car parks and Ankerside, while Amington Band entertained the shoppers under the Town Hall.
Tamworth Borough Council Cabinet member for Economy & Education, Cllr Steve Claymore, said: “Christmas time is very important to any retailer and Tamworth Borough Council is happy to introduce initiatives to make visits to the town centre fun at this time of year.
“The additional Christmas markets always add to the town centre at this time of year and it was great to be able to work with Ankerside to provide some entertainment and fun for children to take part in, as well as boosting town centre trade.”
Normal Tuesday and Saturday markets will resume on Tuesday December 29, with the trial of a small Friday market also continuing. The new Friday markets are being tested due to the growing popularity of street trading on non-market days. If the trial is a success, Friday markets will become a permanent fixture from spring of next year.
