Unique collection of ceramics to be shown for one weekend only at Tamworth Castle

A UNIQUE collection of items, not usually on display to the public, will be brought out of storage for a special exhibition at Tamworth Castle next weekend.

After two successful Collections Weekend events last year, members of staff at the historic Castle decided to have another rummage through the stores to find another interesting display of items to put on show.

So for one weekend only, on Saturday, September 19^th and Sunday, September 20^th, visitors to Tamworth Castle will be able to view a collection of ceramics, many of which came from two of Tamworth’s most iconic manufacturing companies.

Gibbs and Canning of Glascote made world-renowned architectural terracotta, while Skeys of Wilnecote produced everyday household items that were commonly found in pantries and store cupboards.

Items have either been gifted to the Castle or acquired from local collectors over the years. As well as getting a unique look at the collection, visitors will also be able to chat to knowledgeable museum staff and volunteers to find out more about the rich history of both the ornate statues and domestic wares on display.

Tamworth Castle launched its Collections Weekends last year, with two successful events focusing on costumes. As two-thirds of the museum stock is held in storage, the themed weekends provide people with the opportunity to see exhibits that cannot be accommodated in the building on a more permanent basis.

The castle is open between 11.30am and 4pm (building closes at 4.45pm) and general admission fees apply for Collections Weekend.
