HUNDREDS of visitors saw Tamworth Castle as they may never have seen it before last weekend as the Castle By Candlelight event returned by popular demand.
The event saw visitors of all ages experiencing the Castle’s rooms, lit as they would have been in the days before electric lighting – with more than 300 candles used for illumination.
The event was on the theme ‘The History of Light’, with costumed guides and room stewards treating visitors to a series of demonstrations and interpretations on the use of light from fire through candles and gas up to electricity, covering both the practical and more inventive sources of illumination.
The event was heavily supported by the Friends of Tamworth Castle, with members of the group taking part in the costumed demonstrations and explanations.
In all, more than 300 visitors experienced Castle By Candlelight – with the huge majority of them commenting on how much they had enjoyed the event.
Castle by Candlelight Castle ran for more than 20 years until 2009 when it was decided to give it a break. It was brought back in a new format this year after a number of requests from the public.
Tamworth Borough Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob Pritchard, said: “We decided to bring back Castle By Candlelight after a lot of requests from people who had enjoyed it so much in the past.
“Visitors who came along to the new Castle By Candlelight told staff how much they had enjoyed it, there was a lot of interaction with the guides and Tamworth Castle looked beautiful, lit up by hundreds of candles.”
He added: “We are very please with how well the return of Castle By Candlelight was received by visitors who came along to enjoy it.”
