Burton woman charged with terrorism offences
A 26-year-old woman from Burton Upon Trent has been charged with inciting terrorism on social media and being a member of the proscribed terrorist group ISIS.
A 26-year-old woman from Burton Upon Trent has appeared at Westminster Magistrates charged with encouraging acts of terrorism and being a member of the proscribed organisation ISIS.
Tareena Shakil was remanded to appear at the Old Bailey on July 20.
She is accused of using social media to encourage members of the public to commit acts of terrorism. This allegedly took place before she left the UK last October with her infant son.
Shakil was arrested when she returned four months later by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
She was detained after arriving at Heathrow on a flight from Turkey. It is suspected that while out of the country she had joined ISIS in Syria.
Shakil indicated she will plead not guilty.
Police continue to appeal to anyone who has concerns that people they know May be planning to travel to Syria to contact them on 101.
Officers work with a range of agencies to support vulnerable individuals but say early intervention is vital.
The charges, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, are:

Contrary to Section 1 Terrorism Act 2006
Between 23 October 2014 and 9 January 2015, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, belonged to a proscribed organisation, namely Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Contrary to Section 11 Terrorism Act 2000.
