Burton woman charged with terrorism offences

A 26-year-old woman from Burton Upon Trent has been charged with inciting terrorism on social media and being a member of the proscribed terrorist group ISIS.

A 26-year-old woman from Burton Upon Trent has appeared at Westminster Magistrates charged with encouraging acts of terrorism and being a member of the proscribed organisation ISIS.

Tareena Shakil was remanded to appear at the Old Bailey on July 20.

She is accused of using social media to encourage members of the public to commit acts of terrorism. This allegedly took place before she left the UK last October with her infant son.

Shakil was arrested when she returned four months later by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.

She was detained after arriving at Heathrow on a flight from Turkey. It is suspected that while out of the country she had joined ISIS in Syria.

Shakil indicated she will plead not guilty.

Police continue to appeal to anyone who has concerns that people they know May be planning to travel to Syria to contact them on 101.

Officers work with a range of agencies to support vulnerable individuals but say early intervention is vital.

 

The charges, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, are:

Between 30 September 2014 and 20 October 2014, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, published a statement, namely a series of tweets, and at the time of publishing, intended members of the public to be directly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism, or being reckless as to whether members of the public will be directly or indirectly encouraged or otherwise induced by the statement to commit, prepare or instigate such acts or offences. Contrary to Section 1 Terrorism Act 2006

Between 23 October 2014 and 9 January 2015, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, belonged to a proscribed organisation, namely Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Contrary to Section 11 Terrorism Act 2000.

  • 100 agree Joanne! Was watching newsnight and a source in high government had said that there was at least over a thousand British nationals who had gone to Syria and been allowed back here! To do what I wonder?! Have they suddenly had a change of heart?- course they haven’t! I’m sorry but if you go to join a terrorist group who wants to cause harm to our country and many others then they should never be allowed back!! That should be made clear so they know that and if they make that choice then that’s their choice- go and never allowed back.

    Why just assume because she is from an Asian family that she is not British.

  • Anyone else agree or not with me that i’m sick and tired of hearting about this Luton family that have gone to Syria ? One of the top news stories other day to follow the Tunisian story of Brits being killed. If they want to go to Syria thats a few less of those that have shown their true colours, let them go and NEVER COME BACK HERE to endanger us in our own country!

  • If she has dual citizenship then she should loose the British one. If she is British born then that’s a problem. I agree it amounts to treason just not sure what the answer is as legally then she can’t have her passport taken off of her. Prisons are at breaking point already without the 1,000 people that have returned to uk from Syria.

They hate gay people and anyone that doesnt bow to their religion, people die on holiday now……This isnt what made this country great. Our poor next generation will have no freedom

    There are good and bad in all and I feel it is unfair to generalise. There have been enough ‘White British’ people over the years that have committed terrible atrocities but as a ‘White British’ person I wouldn’t want to be put in the same category as them.
