Wednesday, 12th March 2014

Plans were approved by Tamworth Council Planning Committee last night for a new BMW showroom with rooftop parking at Cardinal Point.

A major planning application was made by ‘Synter Group’ in January in relation to the building of a new BMW showroom at Cardinal Point, close to Ventura Retail Park.  The plans were unanimously approved last night (Tue 11) by the Tamworth Borough Council planning committee.

The approved BMW dealership  will house a showroom, MOT facility, Workshop and Parts Store.  The building will be split over two levels with a gross floor space of 5,220 square meters and parking for 437 vehicles at the site.

The service area of the dealership will be on a mezzanine floor area and that there will be a ramp to the rooftop, allowing parking for staff and service vehicles.

Conditions which are suggested to the planning committee include the planting of 12 trees around the site, along with low level landscaping on the site.

Within the Planning Committee ‘Schedule of Applications’  the Borough Council commented in relation to economic development, stating;

“We feel this is a suitable development for the location as it further enhances the car dealership offer in Tamworth and around Cardinal Point, which ultimately has an impact on marketing Tamworth as a retail and visitor location.

“This application also provides the potential for strong sustainable and aspirational employment opportunities across a variety of roles and skills”.

The opening of the dealership will create a total of 93 jobs, 82 full-time and 11 part-time, providing a valuable boost to the Tamworth economy.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy, said:
“This is a fantastic application for yet another prestige brand here in Tamworth. It will be a big asset to the borough’s economy and is yet another sign of the confidence there is in Tamworth as a place to do business.

“I hope to see more investment decisions like this in the future, which will create sustainable employment, in line with our new Local Plan.”
