Two generations of better sleep thanks to Tamworth business

Saturday, 4th May 2019

THE Bed Centre is proud to be in its second generation of helping customers sleep more comfortably as it’s now in its 35th year of trading within the Borough.

The Bed Centre has been trading for almost my whole life, I thought I’d pop in and find out more about them. I wanted to ask them how they have been so successful and what their plans are now.

They began trading 1985 when Tamworth residents Linda and Barrie Millar opened a small shop on Tamworth Road, Kettlebrook, selling beds and mattresses.

I actually remember walking past this shop quite often as a youngster. I’ve slept on a few mattresses purchased from there over the years!

Since opening, the business has grown well, despite the influx of big-name stores.  First, there was an extension to the original shop and then in 2013, they moved to new, much larger, premises. They can now be found next to McDonald’s on Beauchamp Park, Watling Street.

The company had a store in Stafford between 1990 and 2017, which was managed by their Son Ben. In 2017, Linda and Barrie decided to take well-earnt retirement and so Ben decided to take over the family business with his partner Gemma.  At this point, they closed the Stafford Store, allowing them to focus his efforts on the flagship Tamworth store.

It seems that the business has prospered through the years due mainly to customer recommendations and building a solid customer base who return again and again. Not only has The Bed Centre previously won ‘Silentnight Retailer of the Year’. They have also become one of Silentnight’s major stockist – 1 of only 50 in the UK.

Ben and Gemma have a three-year-old son Max and another baby on the way.  Together they work in the store, along with three further employees.

Ben told me: “I am very hands-on with the business, I work in the shop, unload deliveries and deliver items to customers, as well as the day-day behind the scenes running of the business.

“Gemma runs our second business, made2measure mattress which specialises in mattresses for things like motorhomes and boats.  She also helps me with the day-to-day running of The Bed Centre.”

Speaking to Ben about the success of the business and how they have managed to survive the influx of big companies, he told us: “We pride ourselves in helping the customer choose the right bed for them and their requirements – not which is the best profit for us. We’re also just about to start selling bedroom furniture which is something new for us.

“I  hope our furniture range will take off. We get asked about it by people in the shop and so wanted to meet our customers’ needs. They can now buy a complete bedroom furniture package from us.”

You can find The Bed Centre at Unit 1 Beauchamp Industrial Park, Watling Street, Tamworth. You can call them on 01827 284830 or visit their website here.

My recommendation is to think local and support a small family run business.  Next time you are looking for a bed, mattress or bedroom furniture, use The Bed Centre.
