Volunteer chance at hidden gem wildlife site’s open day

Warwickshire Moor

NATURE lovers are being given the chance to find out more about one of Tamworth’s most interesting wildlife habitats – and have the opportunity to get hands-on with some conservation work.

Warwickshire Moor Local Nature Reserve, off Moor Lane in Bolehall, is one of six LNRs in Tamworth and is a valuable wetland habitat. It is one of the last remaining and most accessible wetland sites in the borough and is home to numerous bird species, as well as moths, damselflies, dragonflies and small mammals.

The site is owned and managed by Tamworth Borough Council and is looked after by the Friends of Warwickshire Moor under the Wild About Tamworth project – a partnership between Tamworth Borough Council and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.

Some of the conservation work which has been recently carried out includes the pollarding of the willow and the removal of some non-native tree species. This allows the area to remain wet and protects the vitally-important reedbed, which provides a home for so many species.

Now, a call has gone out for more volunteers to get involved with the Friends group, to help preserve and conserve Warwickshire Moor.

To showcase what the site has to offer, Wild About Tamworth has organised a volunteer event and open day on Saturday June 6 – where anyone interested in volunteering or just learning more about Warwickshire Moor can go along to find out more.

There will be opportunities to have a go at pond-dipping, discover some of the moths which make the site their home and have a look at plans for the future.

There is also the chance to get involved in some conservation work on the day – just bring along some outdoor clothing and boots and all tools will be provided.

The open day is a drop-in event from 10.30am to 1pm on Saturday June 6. Warwickshire Moor can be accessed from the car park on Moor Lane, off Amington Road.

Anyone who would like more information on the open day or to get involved with the Friends of Warwickshire Moor should contact Wild About Tamworth officer, Mel Westlake, on 07970 067711.

Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Communities & Public Health, said: “Warwickshire Moor is a rare wetland habitat and is a real hidden gem. A lot of good work has been done on the site and there are exciting plans to do a lot more.

“I am hoping that a large number of nature lovers will respond to the call for volunteers help to support this vital habitat.”
